The South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) is the professional society for animal scientists, livestock researchers and animal production specialists. It funds a small number of postgraduate bursaries each year for its student members, to keep top graduates in research and in the livestock industry.

About the SASAS Bursary

The bursary supports postgraduate study in animal science or animal production: an Honours or Master’s degree at a university, or an MTech or DTech at a university of technology. Its value is set by the SASAS Council each year and is paid in two instalments, on condition that the recipient’s membership remains valid and progress is satisfactory.

SASAS Bursary eligibility requirements

  • A member of SASAS, with membership kept up to date for the duration of the bursary.
  • A completed BSc (Agric) in animal science or animal production, or an advanced diploma in animal production (NQF 8), from an accredited South African university or university of technology.
  • Registered for an Honours or Master’s degree at a university, or an MTech or DTech at a university of technology.
  • An exceptional academic record (cum laude).
  • Able to complete an Honours or MTech within two years, or a Master’s or DTech within three years.

Applicants of any nationality are accepted.

How to apply for the SASAS Bursary

  1. Download the SASAS bursary application form from the society’s website.
  2. Complete every section, including your academic background, research proposal and financial need.
  3. Attach a certified copy of your graduation certificate, certified official academic transcripts and a recommendation letter from your study leader.
  4. Email everything to secretary@sasas.co.za with the subject line “SASAS Bursary Application 2027”.

6. Do I have to be South African? +
No. Any nationality is accepted, but you must be a SASAS member and be registered at a South African institution.
Update note (checked September 2026): the 2026 round closed on 29 February 2026. The 2027 round has not been announced. SASAS has used both a September and a February closing date in recent years, so check sasas.co.za from September 2026 and again in January 2027.
