Tharisa is a platinum group metals and chrome producer whose open-pit Tharisa Mine lies near Marikana in the North West province. Its bursary programme funds engineering, geology and chemistry students in full and takes them into a graduate internship at the mine, with preference for young people from its host communities.

About the Tharisa Bursary

The bursary funds full-time study at accredited South African universities and universities of technology in:

  • Mining engineering.
  • Metallurgy and chemical engineering.
  • Mechanical, electrical and mechatronics engineering.
  • Geology.
  • Analytical chemistry.

It covers full tuition, accommodation, books and a monthly allowance. Bursars do paid vacation work at the mine each year and complete a graduate internship of at least one year after qualifying.

Tharisa Bursary eligibility requirements

  • South African citizen.
  • Completed Matric with at least 60% in Mathematics and 60% in Physical Science.
  • Studying, or accepted, at an accredited South African institution in one of the fields above.
  • Not receiving any other bursary or sponsorship.
  • Preference for applicants from the mine’s host communities in the North West province.

How to apply for the Tharisa Bursary

  1. Go to the careers section of tharisa.com when the advert is published and open the bursary reference.
  2. Complete the online application and upload certified copies of: your ID; a photograph; your Matric certificate; your full academic record; proof of acceptance or registration; a CV; and proof of household income.
  3. Submit before the closing date. Shortlisted applicants are assessed and interviewed at the mine.
