A clean pass through N3 took one trimester. The common reason N3 took longer was failing one or more of the four subjects. This page covers finishing N3 now that new enrolments have closed; the standard timeline is in how long the N3 course took.

If you still have N3 subjects outstanding
- Ask your college which examination opportunities remain for students who registered before the 2024 phase-out.
- Rewrite the subjects you need as soon as a sitting is available.
- Keep proof of your registration and previous results.
Do you need all four subjects?
It depends on what you want to use N3 for. For trade test access, the regulations focus on specific subjects: mathematics, engineering science and the relevant trade subject at N2 level. For continuing to N4 during the teach-out, colleges set their own subject requirements.
If you cannot finish N3
- Use the subjects you have passed towards a trade route.
- Consider an NC(V) or occupational programme in the same field.
- Ask about recognition of prior learning, which can credit what you already know.
Frequently asked questions
Can I still write N3 exams?
Only if your college confirms remaining examination opportunities for students enrolled before 1 January 2024.
Is a partial N3 useful?
Yes. Individual passed subjects, especially mathematics and engineering science, still count towards trade test access and other routes.
