VerifiedThe NATED N3 course took one trimester of full-time study, about four months, provided you passed all four subjects. N3 was the last of the introductory engineering levels and the usual way into N4 for students without matric mathematics and science.

Why N3 mattered
- It was the entry point to N4 engineering studies for many students.
- Combined with trade theory, it helped people qualify to write a trade test.
- It is at NQF Level 4, the same level as matric, although it is not a matric certificate.
New students can no longer enrol for N3. DHET phased out NATED N1 to N3 from 1 January 2024.
If you hold an N3 certificate
- It remains a valid qualification.
- You can use it towards a trade: many occupational trade programmes and trade tests consider related N-subjects.
- Some colleges may still accept N3 for entry into their remaining N4 intakes during the teach-out; ask your college.

Frequently asked questions
Is N3 equal to matric?
N3 is at NQF Level 4, the same level as matric, but it is a different qualification and does not replace a National Senior Certificate for university admission.
Can I register for N3 in 2027?
No. New enrolment in N1 to N3 ended on 31 December 2023.
