Not the whole matric. The National Senior Certificate follows the Department of Basic Education’s examination calendar, and you can only write when an examination sitting takes place. What can be done in a few months is preparing to rewrite a small number of subjects, if you are already registered for the next sitting.

What is realistic
| Your situation | Realistic timeline |
|---|---|
| You passed most subjects and need to rewrite one or two | Prepare for months before the May/June exams; registration closes early in the year |
| You failed several subjects | Plan for a full exam cycle, with study support |
| You are 21 or older with no matric | The Amended Senior Certificate has fewer subjects but still follows the exam calendar |
| You left school before Grade 12 | A full matric takes years of schooling, or consider NC(V) at a TVET college |
Key dates to plan around
- Registration for the 2026 May/June exams ran from 1 October 2025 to 6 February 2026, online at eservices.gov.za.
- Exams are written in May/June, and NSC candidates improving their results can also register for October/November by the DBE deadline.
- Results follow marking.
Be wary of colleges promising “matric in three months”. They cannot change the exam calendar, and only the DBE and Umalusi issue matric certificates.
Faster alternatives
- A TVET college occupational programme that accepts your current grade.
- The NC(V), which starts from Grade 9 and takes three years.

Frequently asked questions
Can I complete matric in three months?
Not a full matric. You can only write at official exam sittings, but you can prepare to rewrite a few subjects.
Are three-month matric courses legitimate?
Treat them with caution. Only the DBE runs the exams and issues results through Umalusi.
