The Department of Basic Education (DBE) does not publish a limit on how many times you may rewrite matric subjects. Anyone who wants to improve previous NSC results, and is still an NSC candidate, may register as a part-time candidate. Source: the DBE’s NSC examinations page.

The one change that is permanent
If you convert from the National Senior Certificate (NSC) to the Senior Certificate (SC), the DBE says you may not go back to the NSC. Think carefully before choosing the SC route.
Your rewrite options
| Route | Who it is for | When you write |
|---|---|---|
| NSC part-time candidate | You wrote the NSC and want better results | May/June or October/November, depending on when you register |
| Senior Certificate (amended) | Adults 21 or older (18 to 21 only in exceptional cases) with Grade 9, a GETC or an incomplete certificate | May/June |
The February/March supplementary exam has been phased out. The DBE says candidates can register for the June exams to improve their results instead.
Before each attempt
- Register before the deadline for your sitting.
- Use free DBE Second Chance support: SecondChance@dbe.gov.za or 063 696 7246.
- Plan realistically: repeated attempts take time, and TVET alternatives accept Grade 9.
