Can I Apply for a Degree With an N6?

Sometimes, but not automatically. There is no national rule that gives N6 holders a place in a bachelor’s degree. Each university decides, programme by programme, whether it accepts N6 results or the National N Diploma, and on what conditions. A full National N Diploma usually opens more doors than an N6 certificate on its own.

What to prepare

  1. Certified copies of your N4, N5 and N6 certificates or Statements of Results.
  2. Your National N Diploma, if awarded.
  3. Your matric certificate, if you have one.
  4. Proof of relevant work experience, especially for RPL.
  5. The specific programme’s admission page, to check whether N-qualifications are listed.

Things to know before you apply

  • University admission is competitive; meeting a minimum does not guarantee a place.
  • Engineering degrees usually require matric mathematics and physical science at high levels, which N6 results do not replace.
  • The NATED programmes are being phased out, but qualifications already awarded stay valid. See what N6 is equivalent to.

Frequently asked questions

Can I study engineering at university with N6?

Usually not directly for a degree. Many applicants use N6 or the National N Diploma to enter a related diploma at a university of technology, then progress. Check each university’s rules.

Does UNISA accept N6?

UNISA, like other universities, publishes its own admission rules per qualification. Check the specific programme’s requirements before applying.
