VerifiedThe matric examination itself is always set and run by the Department of Basic Education (DBE), wherever you prepare. What differs between institutions is the support you get while preparing and what it costs.

Your options compared
| Institution | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| DBE Second Chance Matric Programme | Free | Registration for the exams, study materials, and face-to-face or online support in some areas |
| Community Education and Training (CET) colleges | Low or free | Adult classes at learning centres, including preparation for matric-level exams |
| Private colleges and tutoring schools | Paid | Structured classes or correspondence study; you still write the DBE exam |
| Online schools | Paid | Self-paced study; check how they register you for the exam |
Choosing between them
- If money is tight, start with the free Second Chance Matric Programme.
- If you need a classroom and a timetable, ask your nearest CET college learning centre.
- If you choose a private college, confirm it is registered with DHET and ask whether exam registration is included or must be done by you.
Where universities and TVET colleges fit
Universities and public TVET colleges do not run matric rewrites. Unisa does not upgrade matric results, as explained in our Unisa guide. A TVET college can instead offer an alternative qualification, the NC(V).
Adults without an NSC
If you are 21 or older and never obtained a matric certificate, the Amended Senior Certificate is an adult matric with fewer subjects. Ask the DBE or a CET college whether it suits you.
Frequently asked questions
Is rewriting matric free?
Registering through the DBE’s Second Chance Matric Programme is free. Private colleges charge for their classes.
Who sets the exam if I study at a private college?
The Department of Basic Education. Private colleges help you prepare, but the matric exam and certificate come from the DBE and Umalusi.
