What Is the NC(V)? The National Certificate (Vocational) Explained

The National Certificate (Vocational), usually written NC(V) or NCV, is a qualification offered at public TVET colleges at NQF Levels 2, 3 and 4. Each level takes a year. It combines general subjects such as language and mathematics with vocational subjects and practical work in one field, such as engineering, office administration, hospitality or primary health.

The NC(V) is not the same as N1 to N3. The N-courses are a different, older programme that is being phased out.

How the NC(V) is structured

LevelRoughly comparable school levelWhat you study
NC(V) Level 2Grade 10 (NQF Level 2)Three fundamental subjects and four vocational subjects
NC(V) Level 3Grade 11 (NQF Level 3)The same structure, at a higher level
NC(V) Level 4Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)The final level; a full qualification

The fundamental subjects are a language, mathematics or mathematical literacy, and life orientation. Umalusi quality-assures the qualification.

Who can enrol

  • Learners who have passed Grade 9 or higher.
  • People who want practical, career-focused learning instead of academic Grades 10 to 12.
  • Applicants who meet the college’s requirements for the specific programme, which may include maths for engineering fields.

What NC(V) Level 4 leads to

  • Work: entry-level jobs in the field you studied.
  • A trade: an apprenticeship or occupational programme in a related trade.
  • Higher education: NC(V) Level 4 can meet the legal minimum for a higher certificate, diploma or bachelor’s degree if your results are high enough. Each university sets its own additional requirements, and only a full NC(V) Level 4 counts, not individual subjects.
