VerifiedThere is no official South African ranking of engineering salaries by field, and widely shared lists naming fields such as petroleum or aerospace engineering usually come from other countries. What reliably affects pay is your registration level, experience and industry.

What drives engineering pay in South Africa
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| ECSA registration | Professional Engineers, Technologists and Technicians carry legal responsibility for work, which employers pay for |
| Experience | Candidate engineers earn less until they register professionally |
| Industry | Mining, energy, petrochemicals and consulting pay differently |
| Location and shifts | Remote sites and shift work often attract allowances |
| Scarcity | Occupations in high demand are harder to fill |
Engineering occupations in high demand
DHET’s 2024 National List of Occupations in High Demand includes Electrical Engineer and Mechanical Engineer, ranked together near the top, as well as Electrical Engineering Technician and Electrician. Demand does not guarantee a job: the same list shows many registered jobseekers for some engineering occupations.
How to research salaries responsibly
- Look at current job adverts for your field and level of registration.
- Ask professional associations in your field for salary surveys.
- Compare graduate programme offers from employers.
- Be wary of rankings with no named South African source.
Choosing a field only for pay is risky. Engineering degrees demand strong mathematics and physical science, and your interest keeps you going through a four-year degree and candidacy.
