The University of the Free State (UFS) funds its strongest graduates into honours and master’s study through tuition bursaries administered by its Centre for Graduate Support. The honours bursary is aimed at students who intend to continue to a master’s degree, and in return recipients work a set number of paid hours as tutors and assistants for the university’s Centre for Teaching and Learning.

About the UFS Honours Bursary

  • Value: R41 000 in the last published round, paid towards tuition for the honours year. A parallel bursary funds master’s students.
  • Condition: recipients must be available for 120 hours during the academic year as tutors, student and academic assistants and markers, and are paid for those hours in addition to the bursary.
  • Purpose: to build a pipeline of master’s and doctoral students at UFS.

UFS Honours Bursary eligibility requirements

  • A final-year undergraduate average of at least 70%.
  • Meeting the admission requirements of the UFS faculty for the honours programme.
  • Intending to apply for, and complete, a master’s degree after honours.
