Admission Requirements for 2027

To be eligible for undergraduate admission at UL, you must meet both the statutory minimum requirements and the university’s specific criteria for your chosen qualification:

  1. You must hold a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or an equivalent qualification with a Bachelor’s degree exemption as certified by Umalusi.
  2. You must achieve at least Level 3 in English because English is the language of learning and teaching at UL.
  3. You must also achieve at least four recognised 20‑credit subjects at Level 4 (50–59%) for degree programmes or Level 3 (40–49%) for diploma programmes.
  4. You must meet the required Admission Point Score (APS) specified in the faculty calendars for your programme.
  5. Life Orientation is included in minimum passes but is usually excluded from the APS calculation.

Meeting these minimum conditions does not guarantee acceptance because some programmes are competitive and select students by APS and available space in the faculty.

Minimum Points Needed for Different Faculties

At UL, the minimum Admission Point Score (APS) varies depending on your chosen programme:

  1. Science and Agriculture: Programmes in science fields generally require strong results in Mathematics or Physical Sciences and a higher APS.
  2. Health Sciences: These programmes are competitive and usually require strong subject achievement in science subjects and a higher APS total.
  3. Management and Law: Moderate APS requirements with emphasis on satisfactory results in language, quantitative and relevant subjects.
  4. Humanities and Social Sciences: APS requirements may be lower compared with science and health fields, but still require good academic performance in language and related subjects.

The exact APS requirements for each programme are published in the official prospectus and faculty calendars and may change from year to year.

It is important to check these sections to confirm the scores you need.

Compulsory Subjects

Your subject requirements depend on the field of study you choose for 2027:

  1. English Home Language or First Additional Language: Required at the specified minimum achievement level because UL teaches in English.
  2. Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: Required for many science, business, management and agricultural programmes, depending on the faculty’s entry rules.
  3. Physical Sciences or Life Sciences: Needed for science, health and agriculture-related degrees.
  4. Other Programme‑specific Subjects: Some faculties may require specific subject results as listed in the prospectus.

Review the prospectus for the exact compulsory subject lists for the qualification you are applying for.

How to Calculate Your 2027 APS

Your Admission Point Score (APS) at UL is calculated from your NSC subject results.

The APS system sums the points for your top subjects to measure academic performance.

To calculate your APS:

  1. Select your top six subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
  2. Convert each subject’s achievement level into points on the NSC scale (e.g., Level 7 = 7 points, Level 6 = 6 points, down to Level 1 = 1 point).
  3. Add the points for your top subjects, including English and required subjects for your programme.

The total score is your APS. You should compare your APS score with the programme’s minimum requirement in the prospectus to see if you are competitive.

2027 Application Opening and Closing Dates

The University of Limpopo usually opens undergraduate applications early in the year before the academic session and closes them later in the same year.
