NMU uses the APS to assess your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results and decide if you meet the minimum entry requirements for undergraduate programmes, including Higher Certificates, Diplomas, and Bachelor’s degrees.

Your APS shows your overall academic achievement and forms part of the admission process

It is calculated from your school subject results and compared with programme‑specific APS requirements.

Meeting the minimum APS does not guarantee admission, especially for competitive fields, but calculating your score correctly improves your chances of acceptance.

NMU APS

The Admission Point Score (APS) at Nelson Mandela University translates your NSC subject results into points.

Each subject you passed in Matric earns several APS points depending on your final mark.

NMU typically calculates APS based on your six best subjects (excluding Life Orientation in most calculations).

Your total APS is then compared with the minimum score required for the programme you want to study.

NMU may add a bonus for applicants from certain school quintiles, but the core APS calculation is based on subject performance.

Step‑by‑Step Instructions to Calculate Your NMU APS

Follow these steps to work out your NMU APS for 2027:

  1. Gather Your Final NSC Results
Use your official Grade 12 percentage results for each subject.
  2. Select Your Best Six Subjects
Choose your six strongest subjects. NMU usually excludes Life Orientation in APS calculations, so do not include it in the six counted. Subjects like English, Mathematics (or Mathematical Literacy if accepted), Physical Sciences, and others contribute to your APS.
  3. Convert Each Subject Mark to APS Points
Use the APS conversion table above to assign points for each of your six subjects.
  4. Add All APS Points Together
Add the points for your six subjects to get your total APS.
  5. Check Your Total Against Programme Requirements
Compare your total APS with the minimum requirement for the qualification you want to study. Each degree or diploma may have a different minimum score.

Calculating an NMU APS Score

Suppose your six best NSC results are:

  1. English: 75% → 6 points
  2. Afrikaans: 80% → 7 points
  3. Mathematics: 69% → 6 points
  4. Physical Science: 65% → 5 points
  5. Life Sciences: 72% → 6 points
  6. Business Studies: 60% → 5 points

Your APS = 6 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 5 = 35 points

This is your NMU APS and can be compared with the minimum requirements for programmes such as Business, Science, or Engineering.

Minimum APS Requirements by Qualification Type

NMU sets minimum APS requirements for different fields of study.

These scores and subject requirements can change year to year, and they vary by faculty and programme.

Always verify exact requirements via the official prospectus for 2027, but below are typical standards:

Higher Certificate Programmes

  • Minimum APS: Around 22–26
  • Designed for entry‑level academic preparation.
  • Lower APS thresholds and more flexible subject requirements.

Diploma Programmes

  • Minimum APS: Around 28–32
  • Common for technical or vocational diplomas.
  • Some diplomas require Mathematics or Technical Mathematics.

Bachelor’s Degrees

Different faculties have higher APS requirements:

  1. Business & Economic Sciences: Typically around 28–30
  2. Science & Engineering: Often 32–36 or higher, with Mathematics and Science required

  4. Humanities and Arts: Around 26–30

Meeting the APS minimum is necessary but does not guarantee admission into competitive programmes.

Selection panels may consider subject performance and availability of places.

Subject Requirements and Additional Conditions

In addition to your APS, NMU often requires:

  1. Specific subject levels, such as Mathematics for Science, Engineering, or Commerce degrees.
  2. English proficiency at a minimum level, usually tested in your NSC results.
  3. Additional tests or interviews for specific programmes if you do not meet the direct entry requirements.
  4. Applicants who do not meet direct admission criteria but have a minimum APS of 22 or higher may be referred for access assessment testing.

Life Orientation and Bonus Points

NMU generally does not include Life Orientation in APS calculations when determining admission scores. Focus instead on your six strongest academic subjects.
