The APS determines whether your final National Senior Certificate (NSC) results qualify you for admission to undergraduate programmes.
Unlike some other universities, UFS uses a specific method that includes your top six academic subjects and may award a bonus point for Life Orientation if you score well.
Your APS affects not only your eligibility to apply but also your competitiveness for selection programmes and merit bursaries.
How APS Works at UFS
UFS calculates your APS by converting your NSC achievement levels into points and then adding them up across subjects.
The APS system uses seven achievement levels. You earn points for your six highest academic subjects.
Life Orientation can contribute a bonus point if you score a level 5 (60%) or higher, but it is treated separately from the six core subjects in most APS calculations.
Before you calculate your APS, make sure you meet the general UFS requirements:
- You must hold a valid NSC certificate.
- You must meet minimum subject requirements for your chosen qualification (for example, English at a minimum achievement level and Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy where specified).
- Some programmes require National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) in addition to APS.
UFS APS Points Conversion Table
This table shows how NSC achievement levels translate into UFS Admission Points.
| NSC Percentage | NSC Level | UFS AP Points |
| 90% – 100% | Level 7 | 8 |
| 80% – 89% | Level 7 | 7 |
| 70% – 79% | Level 6 | 6 |
| 60% – 69% | Level 5 | 5 |
| 50% – 59% | Level 4 | 4 |
| 40% – 49% | Level 3 | 3 |
| 30% – 39% | Level 2 | 2 |
| 0% – 29% | Level 1 | 0 |
You use this conversion for your top six academic subjects when calculating your APS.
Life Orientation adds a bonus of 1 point if you achieve Level 5 (60%) or higher.
Step‑by‑Step Instructions to Calculate Your Kovsie Score
Follow these steps to work out your UFS APS for 2027:
- Gather Your NSC Results
Wait for your official Grade 12 results. You need the final percentages for all subjects. - Identify Your Top Six Academic Subjects
Choose the six subjects with the highest APS points from your NSC results. These must be academic subjects. Do not count Life Orientation in the base six subjects. - Convert Each Subject to UFS AP Points
Use the table above to find the APS points for each subject based on your NSC percentage. - Add the UFS Points Together
Add the points from your six selected subjects. This total is your base APS. - Add Life Orientation Bonus (if applicable)
If your Life Orientation result is Level 5 (60%) or higher, add 1 bonus point. Your final total is your Kovsie Score. - Check Your Total Against Admission Requirements
Compare your Kovsie Score with the minimum APS for your chosen programme. Some selection programmes require much higher totals and specific subject levels.
Example of Calculating Your Kovsie Score
Here is how your points add up in practice:
- English Home Language: 78% → Level 6 → 6 points
- Mathematics: 65% → Level 5 → 5 points
- Physical Sciences: 62% → Level 5 → 5 points
- Life Sciences: 58% → Level 4 → 4 points
- Geography: 72% → Level 6 → 6 points
- Afrikaans FAL: 55% → Level 4 → 4 points
Base Total from Six Subjects: 6 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 30 points
Life Orientation Bonus: If Life Orientation is 60% or higher → +1 point
Total Kovsie Score: 31
What Your Kovsie Score Means
Your UFS APS determines whether you meet the minimum entry standards for your chosen qualification.
A higher score improves your chances of acceptance, especially for competitive courses.
UFS also uses APS scores to award merit bursaries and classify top achievers.
For example, applicants with APS totals above certain levels may be recognised as high achievers for funding opportunities.
