Flender (Pty) Ltd is the South African arm of Flender GmbH, a German manufacturer of industrial gear units, couplings and mechanical drive systems used in mining, power generation, cement, water treatment and general manufacturing. The local business is based in Jet Park, Boksburg. Flender was a Siemens subsidiary until 2021, when it was sold to the Carlyle Group and became an independent company.

South African citizen.
Completed Matric, or in Grade 12 at the time of applying.
At least 60% for Mathematics in Matric.
At least 60% for Physical Science in Matric.
Intending to study, or already studying, full-time towards a BEng in Mechanical Engineering at a recognised South African university.
An excellent academic record overall.

The bursary was aimed at undergraduate students. No postgraduate funding was offered.

Application process for the Flender (Pty) Ltd Bursary

In the 2021 cycle applications were made online through the Siemens jobs portal under reference number 216284. Because Flender is no longer part of Siemens, any future intake will be advertised on flender.com or through the company’s local HR office instead. The documents required were:

Certified copy of your South African ID.
Certified copy of your Matric certificate, or latest Grade 12 results.
Certified copy of your latest tertiary academic record, if already studying.
Proof of registration or a letter of acceptance from the university.
A CV.

Shortlisted candidates were invited to an interview before the final selection was made.
