Gold Circle is the horseracing operator in KwaZulu-Natal, formed by the merger of the Durban Turf Club, the Clairwood Turf Club and the Pietermaritzburg Turf Club. It runs the Greyville and Scottsville racecourses and stages the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Its bursary funded tertiary study for young people from low-income families in the province and for the children of its own employees.

About the Gold Circle Bursary

The bursary covered registration fees, tuition and compulsory prescribed textbooks for a degree, diploma or certificate at an accredited South African institution, in fields the company considered relevant to its operations, such as business, finance, IT, hospitality, marketing, veterinary and equine studies.

Gold Circle Bursary eligibility requirements

For members of the public:

• South African citizen aged 15 to 35.
• Completed Matric with an average of at least 65%.
• Gross family income of no more than R180 000 a year, with proof of financial hardship.
• Preference for previously disadvantaged applicants.

For children or wards of Gold Circle employees: the employee must have worked for the company for at least one continuous year and earn no more than R180 000 a year, and the family must show financial hardship. All applicants had to have at least 65% in every module already completed and be enrolled or accepted at an accredited institution.

Gold Circle Bursary application process

Applications were emailed to Arvind Hiralall, Corporate Services Administrator, at arvindh@goldcircle.co.za with the subject line “Gold Circle Bursary Application” and these attachments:

• Certified ID and Matric certificate.
• Academic transcripts and proof of acceptance from the institution.
• Proof of address and three months of bank statements.
• Parents’ or guardians’ IDs, proof of income and bank statements.
• A motivation letter and a reference letter.

Gold Circle Bursary closing date

The last confirmed closing date was 31 January 2023. No 2027 closing date has been published.
