Group Five Bursary 2027, Requirements & Application

Group Five was for decades one of South Africa’s largest construction and engineering groups, building roads, power stations, stadiums and mining infrastructure across Africa. Like most big contractors it funded engineering students through a bursary programme and took bursars into its graduate training pipeline.

What the Group Five Bursary offered

For the record, the programme funded full-time undergraduate study in:

• Civil engineering.
• Mechanical and electrical engineering.
• Construction management and quantity surveying.

It covered tuition, books and accommodation, with vacation work on Group Five sites, and carried a work-back obligation after graduation.

Group Five Bursary requirements

• South African citizen.
• Matric average of at least 65%.
• Strong results in Mathematics and Physical Science, typically 70% or more.
• Acceptance at a South African university for one of the degrees above.
• Financial need was considered but was not the main criterion; the company was recruiting future engineers.

Group Five Bursary closing date

The bursary is permanently closed. There is no closing date for 2027, and the addresses bursary@groupfive.co.za and learnerships@groupfive.co.za are no longer monitored. Do not send applications or personal documents to them.

Construction and engineering bursaries that are open for 2027

The construction sector still funds a large number of engineering students every year. Apply to these instead:

• SAICE Patrons Engineering Bursary Scheme (SPEBS), funded jointly by the large civil contractors.
• WBHO, Murray & Roberts, Stefanutti Stocks, Raubex and Concor, which each run their own annual bursary intake.
• SANRAL and the provincial roads departments, for civil engineering with a public-sector work-back.
