The Maize Trust funds research and training that benefits South Africa’s maize industry, from breeding and agronomy to grain storage and food science. Its postgraduate bursary is one of the better-paying agricultural awards in the country, and it is administered by L&L Agricultural Services in Pretoria.
About the Maize Trust Bursary
- Master’s by dissertation: up to R99 750 a year for two years.
- Doctorate: up to R131 250 a year for three years.
- Research must be relevant to the maize industry in an approved discipline, including agronomy, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, plant breeding, plant pathology, entomology, soil science, food science, molecular biology, livestock science, data science and precision agriculture.
- Bursars sign the trust’s bursary conditions and report on progress against the Gantt chart in their proposal.
Maize Trust Bursary eligibility requirements
- South African citizen.
- Registered, or registering, full-time for a research Master’s or doctorate at an approved South African university.
- Research topic approved by the Maize Trust as relevant to the maize industry.
- No funding secured from other sources.
- A strong academic record and a clear motivation covering academic ability and financial need.
How to apply for the Maize Trust Bursary
- Open the postgraduate application form at agrimanage.co.za.
- Upload a certified ID (less than three months old), a colour photo, an updated CV, proof of registration and the first-year fee statement, your latest academic transcript on university letterhead, a research proposal with a title and Gantt chart, and a motivation letter.
- Submit by 1 October 2026. Awards are confirmed before the January 2027 payment.
