Bursaries that follow the mine, not the head office
Afrimat does not run one national bursary with one closing date. Individual operations and business units advertise their own bursaries, each on its own schedule. For 2027 study, the Afrimat Mining Services bursary closed on 27 April 2026, and the Nkomati Anthracite bursary closed on 23 August 2026, four months later.
Nkomati Anthracite shows why the dates differ. The Nkomati mine near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga funds engineering and chemistry students as a commitment in its social and labour plan, the agreement mines make with government about local development. A bursary written into a specific mine’s plan follows that mine’s calendar and often favours applicants from nearby communities.
The Afrimat Foundation Trust
Afrimat set up the Afrimat Foundation Trust as a non-profit organisation to uplift the communities around its operations. Afrimat says the group’s success depends on the wellbeing of those communities, and the foundation designates the host communities around its mines as beneficiaries. Students from those areas should watch for opportunities through the foundation as well as through the operations’ own bursaries.
How to keep track of Afrimat calls
Because dates spread across the year, check the careers section of afrimat.co.za every few weeks rather than once. Note which operation advertises each call, and read its residency and field requirements closely. Expect the Nkomati Anthracite round for 2028 study to open around June 2027 and close in August 2027.
Afrimat also publishes a company history and a group snapshot on afrimat.co.za. Reading them before an interview shows which operations sit near your home and which products each business makes, knowledge that helps you explain why you want a specific Afrimat bursary.
