Columbus Stainless, part of Spain’s Acerinox Group, makes stainless steel at a single, fully integrated plant in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Columbus says the business has manufactured and supplied steel since 1964, and the company now supplies flat-rolled stainless and carbon steel to customers in Africa and export markets.

Why a single-site plant matters

Columbus describes its Middelburg operation as technologically advanced and fully integrated, meaning melting, casting and rolling happen in one place. Columbus says that layout lets the company adjust quickly to changes in the market. For bursars, a single site means vacation work and a first job at the same plant rather than a rotation across provinces.

Acerinox, the majority shareholder, operates in the global stainless and high-performance alloys market, and the Industrial Development Corporation has held the remaining stake. That combination gives Columbus both an international parent and a South African state development partner.

Separate undergraduate and postgraduate rounds

Columbus runs its bursary with two application streams. For 2027 study, undergraduate applications closed on 28 August 2026 and postgraduate applications closed three days later, on 31 August 2026. Columbus usually advertises in July or August, so students should expect the 2028 round around the same time in 2027.

Doing your own research on Columbus

Columbus publishes information about its products and processes on columbus.co.za. Reading about stainless steel grades, cold rolling and the plant’s single-site design before an interview helps applicants in metallurgy, chemical engineering or mechanical engineering show real interest. Students outside Mpumalanga should also think carefully about living in Middelburg, because Columbus operates one plant.

Postgraduate applicants should think about how a master’s or doctoral project could connect to a stainless steel plant, for example corrosion, alloy development or process efficiency. A research proposal that speaks to problems a single integrated plant faces gives Columbus a clear reason to fund you rather than a general science student.
