Where Evander’s gold comes from
Current production at Evander centres on the 8 Shaft Pillar and the Egoli underground project, which the provider record describes as one of the lowest-cost underground gold operations in South Africa. A new underground project needs mining engineers, geologists, surveyors and ventilation and safety specialists, which explains Evander’s interest in funding students.
Evander’s parent company has grown recently. Pan African Resources now trades on the JSE, the London Stock Exchange and the Australian Securities Exchange, and published audited results for its financial year ended 30 June 2026.
A bursary for Govan Mbeki residents
Evander Mines funds a bursary to build a pipeline of engineering and geology graduates for its operations. BursariesAfrica’s earlier guide to the bursary records a key rule: applicants must live within Govan Mbeki Local Municipality, which includes Secunda, Evander, Embalenhle, Bethal and surrounding areas.
That residency rule turns the Evander bursary into a community programme. A strong student from Johannesburg cannot apply, while a student from Embalenhle or Kinross has a real chance.
How to research the Evander bursary
Our Evander Gold Mining bursary guide has not been refreshed with 2027 dates. Contact Evander Mines’ community or human resources office to ask when the next round will open, which fields it covers and what proof of residence the mine accepts.
Read Pan African Resources’ operational reports on Evander and the Egoli project before an interview, and ask whether bursars do vacation work underground and must work at Evander after graduating. Secunda’s petrochemical industry also employs engineers, so Govan Mbeki students can apply to Evander and to Sasol in the same year.
Students unsure whether they live within Govan Mbeki Local Municipality can check their municipal account or ask their ward councillor, who can confirm the municipality and issue a proof of residence letter. Applicants should keep that letter recent, because many bursaries reject proof of residence older than three months.
Mining students can compare Evander with other operations on our mining engineering bursaries page.
