An engineering firm that likes complexity
GIBB describes complexity as part of its DNA. GIBB says it operates in a deeply complex society and understands the many elements that affect successful project delivery, and that the more moving parts a project has, the more GIBB enjoys the challenge. For engineering students, that description hints at the kind of work GIBB offers: large projects with technical, environmental and social dimensions.
GIBB’s project record illustrates the point. GIBB acted as the environmental impact practitioner for one project’s application for environmental authorisation, managing the scoping and environmental impact assessment process over a 10-year period. Few students realise that engineering consultancies handle work like this alongside design.
The GIBB bursary
GIBB supports bursaries and graduate development programmes for students in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, according to a provider record checked in August 2026. How to research GIBB before applying
Read GIBB’s market pages and choose a sector that matches your interests, such as water, transport or power. Consulting engineers work closely with clients, government and communities, so explain in your motivation why you want consulting work rather than a role at a single operating company.
Email GIBB’s marketing address or call its Johannesburg office to ask whether a bursary will run for 2027, which disciplines qualify and whether bursars do vacation work in GIBB offices. Ask how GIBB’s graduate programme supports young engineers towards professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
GIBB’s work in petrochemicals, property and project finance also creates opportunities for engineers interested in the business side of projects, such as feasibility studies and financial modelling. Students with interests beyond pure design can ask GIBB about those areas when making contact.
