A small firm with public infrastructure clients
Mtema Mashao works from offices in Mbombela (Nelspruit), Tzaneen and Pretoria, mainly across Mpumalanga and Limpopo, according to a provider record checked in August 2026. Mtema Mashao offers project management and structural, road, municipal, water and wastewater engineering, as well as geotechnical investigations, largely for municipalities and provincial government departments.
The team is small. Mtema Mashao’s website lists six engineers, two of them professionally registered, a professional technologist, four technologists and four experienced civil engineering technicians. Mtema Mashao is a member of the South African Black Technical and Allied Careers Organisation (SABTACO) and works with other emerging and established consulting firms.
A developmental approach to projects
Mtema Mashao describes its approach as developmental. Mtema Mashao implements projects using construction methods that focus on poverty relief, local employment and the development of local contractors. Mtema Mashao also says its strength is explaining technical solutions in terms the whole client organisation understands, helping municipalities reduce service delivery backlogs.
Why a mid-sized firm funds students
As a black-owned practice competing for engineering talent against much larger national firms, Mtema Mashao runs its bursary to build its own future workforce. The firm describes the programme as assisting potential future employees by funding their studies and developing skills in the engineering sector. The bursary covers tuition, prescribed textbooks, accommodation and meals, and includes in-service training with the company. Applicants should be South Africans aged 18 to 26 with at least a C average and financial need.

How to research Mtema Mashao
Phone or email the Mbombela office before the end of October 2026 to confirm whether a 2027 round is open and where to submit forms. Ask which office bursars would train in, since a Tzaneen placement suits Limpopo students. In a small firm, bursars work closely with senior engineers, so show genuine interest in municipal roads and water projects.
