Mission and plants

Magalies Water’s mission is to provide sustainable, safe and reliable bulk water, sanitation and related services to water services authorities and other users, in a way that improves quality of life and economic growth. Treatment works such as Vaalkop, whose planned shutdowns Magalies Water announces to customers, show the scale of infrastructure the board runs.

Magalies Water also runs community education programmes on water conservation, water quality and sustainable practices, with experienced professionals leading sessions on water safety.

Work experience programmes

Magalies Water offers two kinds of workplace programmes. Graduate programmes give unemployed people who have completed a qualification the work experience they need to find jobs. Experiential training serves students who must complete a period of workplace experience to finish their qualification.

Fourteen bursaries for 2027

Magalies Water offers 14 bursaries for 2027, two in each of seven fields: biotechnology or microbiology, chemistry or analytical chemistry, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, information and communication technology, and water care. Depending on the field, students can study for a degree, an NQF 6 diploma, N4 to N6 certificates or an advanced diploma. The bursary covers tuition, books, accommodation and an allowance, with vacation work at Magalies Water.

Applicants must be South African citizens aged 18 to 35 with at least 65% overall in Matric, and Magalies Water prefers women, previously disadvantaged applicants and people with disabilities. Applications for 2027 close on 23 October 2026, by email with the subject line “Magalies Water Bursary 2027”.

How to research Magalies Water

With only two awards per field, competition is intense. Read about Magalies Water’s treatment works and the areas it supplies, and explain how your field would help keep water flowing to towns and mines. Water care and N-level students should note that Magalies Water funds TVET qualifications, which many water utilities do not.
