Engineering from front-end design to commissioning

MegChem specialises in greenfields, brownfields and integration projects. MegChem’s process engineering team handles most of its front-end engineering design, while mechanical and piping groups deliver detail engineering, and a specialist team uses numerical techniques to solve structural and fluid mechanics problems. MegChem supports clients through procurement, construction and commissioning, and offers long-term maintenance support beyond installation.

MegChem describes itself as technology neutral, meaning it works with whatever technologies its clients already use. MegChem’s safety department runs a risk-based system that complies with ISO 45001:2018.

People and ownership

MegChem employs more than 400 people, including over 80 professional engineers and 110 designers, and says its international operations expose employees to industry-leading innovations. MegChem is independently verified as 51.30% black-owned, with 11.07% black women ownership.

Learnerships and graduate training

MegChem has built a reputation for developing technical drafting and engineering skills. MegChem’s Computer Aided Drawing Office Practice (NQF 4) learnership combines theory with on-the-job training for aspiring draughtspeople, with the chance of a permanent position on completion. MegChem’s graduate programme rotates recent graduates across departments, involves them in oil, gas, power and petrochemical projects, and trains them in tools such as 3D scanning and modelling.

The MegChem bursary

MegChem supports bursaries for engineering-related and drawing office qualifications, according to a provider record checked in August 2026. BursariesAfrica’s older MegChem guide, which lists applications by email to MegChem’s bursaries address, has not been refreshed with verified 2027 dates or fields, so treat it as background only.

How to research MegChem

Check MegChem’s careers and learnerships pages for current calls, and email the bursaries address to ask whether a 2027 round will run and which fields it covers. Students from Secunda, eMbalenhle and the Govan Mbeki area should ask whether local applicants receive preference. A drawing office learnership can also be a practical first step for matriculants with strong mathematics and technical drawing.

Secunda’s petrochemical plants run around the clock, and shutdowns for maintenance and upgrades create steady demand for the engineers, designers and draughtspeople that firms like MegChem employ.
