What UWP does

UWP works across civil, structural, transportation, water and other infrastructure disciplines for public and private sector clients. Consulting engineers like UWP plan and design roads, bridges, water supply and sanitation schemes and buildings, prepare tender documents and supervise contractors on site on behalf of clients such as municipalities and government departments.

Why UWP funds civil engineers

South Africa has long struggled to produce enough civil engineers, particularly black and female graduates. UWP funds its bursary to secure a pipeline of qualified civil engineers and to familiarise students with the firm’s way of working before they graduate. For a consultancy, graduates who already know the firm’s standards, software and project culture become productive faster.

The UWP bursary

UWP’s bursary supports students studying a BSc Eng, BEng or BTech in civil engineering, or postgraduate civil engineering study. Bursars receive paid vacation work at UWP during university breaks, which gives them design office and site exposure long before they graduate and lets UWP assess and mentor future employees.

Bursars also gain access to UWP’s in-house Blueprint Programme, which helps young engineers work towards professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa once they join the industry. Registration as a professional engineer typically requires several years of structured, supervised experience, so a formal training programme is valuable.
