Nanoteq specialises in cryptographic technology and information security for government, defence and other sensitive clients, including secure communications for military radios and mobile phones, and protection of strategic information and electronic transactions.

Part of Reunert, then Etion Create

Reunert, a JSE-listed industrial group founded in 1888, acquired full ownership of Nanoteq in 2016 through its Applied Electronics segment. Reunert added Etion Create in 2022. Etion Create, founded in 1997 and originally known as Parsec, is an original design manufacturer serving defence, cybersecurity, mining, industrial and rail clients.

On 1 October 2024 Reunert merged Nanoteq and Etion Create into one business trading under the Etion Create brand. Trevor Raman, CEO of Reunert Applied Electronics, said the merger would unlock growth by combining business development, financial and technical skills. Petrus Pelser, managing director of Etion Create, said the merged business would combine Nanoteq’s cryptographic expertise with Etion Create’s broader cybersecurity experience. The two businesses exhibited jointly at IDEX 2025 in Abu Dhabi.

What the merged company values

Etion Create says its culture values inclusiveness, diversity and integrity, and that it is especially committed to empowering young people through internships, learnerships and mentoring. Etion Create has installed solar panels at its headquarters as part of its energy efficiency commitments.

The Nanoteq bursary

The Nanoteq bursary funds full-time BEng studies in computer engineering and electronic engineering at recognised South African universities, worth up to R120 000 per student per year. The bursary targets South African citizens from previously disadvantaged communities with strong academic records. The last published round, for 2025, closed on 15 November 2024, and no 2027 call had been published when BursariesAfrica checked.

Because Nanoteq now sits inside Etion Create, check both Nanoteq’s website and the careers page on Etion Create’s site, and email the bursary address from October 2026 to ask whether the programme continues under the merged company. Read about cryptography and secure communications before any interview, since this specialised field suits students who enjoy digital systems, mathematics and security.

Security clearance can matter in defence-related work, so applicants should be ready for background checks if they later join the company.
