Ethical investing and Islamic finance
Shariah-compliant investing follows Islamic principles: funds avoid interest-bearing instruments and companies whose main business involves activities such as alcohol, gambling or conventional lending. Managing such funds demands expertise in both conventional finance and Islamic jurisprudence, a niche skill set in short supply in South Africa, according to a provider record checked in August 2026.
An international structure
Oasis operates in South Africa through offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, and internationally through related companies. Oasis’s shared website explains that Oasis Crescent (UK) Limited and Oasis Group Holdings are separate groups of companies linked by a global partnership agreement. The UK group includes Oasis Crescent Advisory Services, authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority, and Oasis Global Management Company (Ireland). In South Africa, Oasis operates under the oversight of the Financial Sector Conduct Authority.
A bursary that has gone quiet
For a number of years Oasis funded full-time undergraduate students at South African universities in actuarial science, mathematics and statistics, finance, accounting and economics, and information technology. The bursary covered tuition and books, and in some cases accommodation and an allowance, with vacation work at Oasis’s Cape Town offices. The provider record says Oasis required bursars to work for the company for as long as they were funded.
The programme is now dormant. Oasis’s bursary page stated that it did not open for the 2022 or 2023 intakes because of capacity limits, and no call has been published since. There is no 2027 application.
What students should do instead
Keep an eye on Oasis’s bursary page in case the programme is relaunched, and phone the Cape Town office if you see a new advert elsewhere, to confirm that it is genuine. Students interested in Islamic finance can ask their universities about courses or research on the subject, and look for vacation work at other asset managers.
Apply to active finance bursaries in the meantime rather than waiting for Oasis.
