What an asset manager does

Asset managers invest money on behalf of individuals, retirement funds and institutions, in shares, bonds, property and cash. STANLIB offers unit trusts, retirement products and institutional investment management in South Africa and several other African markets. Asset management careers include portfolio managers, investment analysts, economists, risk specialists, client service staff and data and technology professionals.

STANLIB belongs to the Standard Bank Group through Liberty, which Standard Bank took full ownership of in 2022.

A pipeline of black investment professionals

South Africa’s investment industry has long lacked black professionals in senior investment roles. STANLIB’s bursary funding forms part of the Standard Bank Group’s early careers and transformation strategy, which aims to bring black professionals into financial services and address shortages of investment and actuarial skills.

The ABSIP-STANLIB bursary

STANLIB funds a bursary run by the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP), formed in 1995 to increase black representation in South Africa’s financial markets. The bursary funds black students in investment management, business finance, economics, financial analysis, mathematics and statistics at 16 universities, from UCT, Wits and Stellenbosch to Fort Hare, Limpopo, Zululand, Venda and Walter Sisulu University.

The bursary covers tuition, a book allowance and on-campus accommodation, plus a laptop and stipend depending on need. Bursars join ABSIP’s student chapter and are introduced to STANLIB and other asset managers for vacation work. Applicants need at least a 75% average in core modules. ABSIP advertises in December and closes in mid-January; the 2026 round closed on 17 January 2026.

The provider record notes that Standard Bank Group bursaries generally require graduates to accept a job offer if one is made, so ask whether that applies before accepting.
