Buildings on the skyline

Tiber says it has helped define South Africa’s skyline for more than seven decades. Tiber’s projects include Discovery’s head office, 15 Alice Lane Towers, 144 Oxford Road, Centurion Mall, Teraco’s JB4 data centre, the Airports Company South Africa Western Precinct, 100 Grayston Drive and Sandton Gate. Tiber offers traditional main contracting, full turnkey design and construction, and co-investment development.

Tiber credits its staying power to adaptability: investing in research and development, exploring alternative construction methods and changing its approach as the industry changes.

People and community

Tiber retains a large core of directly employed people and promotes previously disadvantaged staff through ongoing training. Tiber’s socio-economic development work supports programmes that teach transferable skills and open access to the workplace, such as Tiber Learnerships, and Tiber contributed to the Solidarity Fund during the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. Tiber also runs a bursary scheme for employees’ children who wish to study construction.

The Tiber bursary

Tiber’s bursary funds full-time students in civil engineering, structural engineering, building sciences and construction who have completed at least first year with a 60% average. The bursary covers tuition and examination fees, prescribed books, residence fees and a monthly stipend. Bursars complete at least six weeks of vacation or practical work each year before joining the construction world, and several have qualified and now work full-time at Tiber; BursariesAfrica’s earlier guide reports 24 bursars employed through the programme.

How to research Tiber

Email Tiber to ask whether a 2027 round will run, and walk past or read about one of Tiber’s Sandton buildings to discuss in an interview. Since funding starts from second year, focus on strong first-year results.

Tiber’s recent work on data centres and large office towers means structural and civil engineering students can learn about complex foundations, concrete frames and tight inner-city sites.
