Global standards, local projects
In South Africa, WSP works on major public and private infrastructure projects, applying the technical standards and experience of its international network. Engineering consultancies like WSP design roads, rail systems, water and wastewater schemes, energy projects and buildings, and environmental teams carry out impact assessments, water and air quality studies and sustainability advice.
Why consultancies compete for students
Professional services firms compete with each other, with state-owned companies and with mining and construction firms for a limited national pool of qualified engineers. Building relationships with strong students years before they graduate is a more reliable way for WSP to secure talent than competing only in the graduate market.
The WSP bursary
WSP’s bursary funds civil, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering and environmental science students entering their second, third or final year at recognised South African universities, with at least a 65% average. The bursary covers tuition and contributes towards study materials and living costs, with vacation work and internships during studies.
WSP describes the route to a graduate job as subject to performance and business need rather than guaranteed, and publicly available information describes no binding work-back: bursars are strongly positioned for graduate roles but are not obliged to accept one, and WSP is not obliged to offer one.
Timing
The 2026 round closed on 30 September 2025, and WSP had not published a 2027 closing date when BursariesAfrica checked on 15 September 2026, so a round on similar timing may close soon. WSP’s website blocked automated reading when checked.

Open WSP’s South African bursary page in a browser immediately and email the graduate careers team if no advert is visible. Read about one of WSP’s recent South African projects and mention it in your motivation. Environmental science students should explain how their field supports engineering projects, since WSP combines both.
