Thungela Bursary 2024: How to apply, Eligibility requirements and Closing dates

For all my under-privileged South African students aspiring to pursue a career in mining and its related fields, the Thungela Bursary is a great opportunity for you to get financial aid.

Not only will the bursary lift your financial burdens, but it will also open doors to a rewarding career path in the center of the South African economy.

How to Apply for the Thungela Bursary

The application process for the Thungela Bursary usually starts in July of the year before your academic year. So if you wish to join the 2025 academic year, you must apply in July 2024.

You can get the application form and other important information through the Thungela website (https://www.thungela.com/careers/bursary-opportunities).

Make sure you crosscheck the year to ensure you downloaded the latest form because the eligibility requirements and application procedures might be different.

The online application form is user-friendly and requests information such as your:

  1. Personal details (name, ID number, contact information)
  2. Academic history (matric results, current qualification details)
  3. Future study plans (university/institution, intended course)
  4. Financial background (income of yourself and/or your guardian)
  5. Motivational essay outlining your career aspirations, financial need, and why you deserve the bursary

Complete your form accurately and attach the necessary documents (certified copies of academic records, ID, proof of income, etc.) before you submit them.

Thungela Bursary Eligibility Requirements

Not every student will be eligible for the Thungela Bursary. To stand a chance, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  2. You must be under 25 years old at the time of applying.
  3. You must have completed Matric with good grades in Mathematics and Science subjects.
  4. You must be intending to study full-time at a recognized South African tertiary institution in a mining-related field, such as:
    • Mining Engineering
    • Geology
    • Environmental Science
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
  5. You must demonstrate genuine financial need and not be receiving any other bursary funding.
  6. You must have a strong academic record, demonstrating your potential for academic success.
  7. You must come from a disadvantaged background, as defined by Thungela’s bursary policy.

Remember that meeting these eligibility requirements doesn’t guarantee that you’ll be selected.

You will be more likely to win if you have excellent academic performance, financial need, a commitment to community service, and a genuine passion for the mining industry.

Thungela Bursary Closing Date

The Thungela Bursary application usually closes at the end of July every year, most commonly 31 July.

You must do well to submit your application before the deadline to increase your chances of success.

Submitting early will show the selection committee that you are committed and organized, two qualities that they value a lot.
