Anglo American’s South African thermal coal business was demerged in 2021 and now trades as Thungela Resources, which runs the collieries in Mpumalanga that once carried the Anglo Coal name. The bursary continues under Thungela, administered by Career Wise, and funds engineering and geology students from first year onwards.
About the Thungela Bursary
- Fields: chemical, electrical, industrial, mechanical, metallurgical and mining engineering, and geology.
- Levels: first, second and third year of an undergraduate qualification.
- Covers tuition and study costs, with the package set by Career Wise, plus practical experience at Thungela’s Mpumalanga operations.
Thungela Bursary eligibility requirements
- South African citizen and an employment equity candidate.
- Studying an undergraduate qualification in a listed field at an accredited South African tertiary institution.
- An excellent academic record and demonstrated financial need.
- Willing to do the practical experience that mining-related subjects require.
How to apply for the Thungela Bursary
- Open the Career Wise application portal at careerwise.co.za and use the Thungela promotional code published in the year’s advert.
- Upload certified copies of your ID, Matric certificate, current academic transcripts if you are studying, and your parents’ or guardians’ proof of income (payslips, an affidavit or pension documents).
- Submit before the closing date. Shortlisted applicants are assessed and interviewed.
Thungela Bursary closing date
31 August 2026 for the 2027 academic year (closed). Expect the end of August 2027 for 2028.
