Each N-level takes one semester (business studies) or one trimester (engineering studies) of full-time theory. N4 to N6 theory therefore takes about 18 months for business studies and about a year for engineering studies, if you pass every subject first time. The National N Diploma then needs workplace experience on top of the theory.

The NATED N4 to N6 programmes are being phased out. Colleges report last intakes during 2026 and 2027, and all National N Diploma requirements must be met by 30 June 2029.
What can make it take longer
- Failing a subject: you rewrite it in a later examination, which can add a semester or trimester.
- Studying part-time or through distance learning.
- Finding a placement: workplace experience often takes longer to arrange than the theory.
What happens after the theory: what N6 is equivalent to and whether N6 gets you into a degree.
