The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is a social security scheme in South Africa that provides financial assistance to eligible contributors who become unemployed.

If you’ve recently lost your job and are a UIF contributor, you can claim benefits to help you through this challenging time.

How to Claim UIF

There are two main ways to claim UIF benefits in South Africa:

  1. Claiming at your nearest Department of Labour office: This is the traditional method and may be preferable for those unfamiliar with online processes.
  2. Claiming online via uFiling: The Department of Labour’s online portal, uFiling, offers a convenient alternative for submitting your UIF claim electronically.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of each method:

Claiming at a Department of Labour Office:

  1. Gather Required Documents: Before visiting your nearest Department of Labour office, ensure you have the following documents:
    • Certified copy of your South African ID document.
    • Completed UI-19 form (provided by your previous employer).
    • Your latest payslips (covering the past six months).
    • Proof of banking details (account number and branch code).
    • If claiming illness benefits, a doctor’s certificate is necessary.
  2. Register as a Work Seeker: Upon arrival at the Department of Labour office, register yourself as a work seeker. This step is very important as it informs the UIF that you’re actively searching for employment.
  3. Submit your UIF Claim: Once registered, locate the UIF claims section and submit the required documents mentioned above. A departmental representative will assist you with processing your claim.
  4. Signing the Unemployment Register:  After submitting your claim, you’ll be expected to sign the unemployment register periodically (typically every four weeks) to confirm your continued unemployment status.

Claiming Online via uFiling

You may also file your claim online through uFiling. Below is how to go about it:

  1. Register on uFiling: To claim UIF benefits online, you’ll need to register on the uFiling website (https://ufiling.labour.gov.za/). This process involves creating a secure profile with login credentials.
  2. Submit your UIF Claim electronically: Once registered, navigate to the UIF claims section within uFiling. The platform will guide you through electronically submitting the required documents, similar to the in-person claim process.
  3. Track your Claim Status:  uFiling allows you to conveniently track the progress of your UIF claim application.
