Closed: the 2026/2027 to 2027/2028 intake closed on 23 January 2026, and the WCED vacancies page listed no graduate internships on 29 September 2026.
The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) runs a Graduate Internship Programme that places young graduates in its Cape Town head office and in its education district offices for 24 months of paid work experience. The most recent intake, advertised as the Graduate Internship Programme 2026/2027 to 2027/2028, paid a monthly stipend of R7 860.50. Applications for that intake closed on 23 January 2026. On 29 September 2026 the WCED vacancies page listed no graduate internships, and the department had not announced a date for another intake.
Two years of office work in the education department
The WCED advert describes the programme as a youth programme focused on people aged up to 34. Interns assist staff with general office work, including research, data entry, filing and coordination, and give administrative support in the office where they are placed. The department particularly encouraged women and people with disabilities to apply. The advert warned that the WCED would not pay relocation, subsistence or travel costs, so an intern placed in a district far from home carries those costs personally.
Where the last intake placed graduates
The advert listed each office with the fields it wanted. At head office, the placements were:
| Head office unit | Fields wanted |
|---|---|
| Physical Resource Planning | Finance; Project or Facility Management |
| Financial Accounting | Finance; Internal Audit; Taxation |
| Management Accounting | Finance |
| Service Benefits | Human Resource Management |
| Examinations | Human Resource Management; Public Management; Communication; Project Management |
| Presidential Youth Employment Initiative | Public Administration or Management; Human Resource Management; Office Management; Project Management |
| Ministry of Education | Communication; Law or Industrial Relations |
| Chief Directorate: Districts, and Branch CAM | Public Administration or Management |
| Chief Directorate: BIM | Data Science; Statistics; Economics |
| Early Childhood Development | Business Administration |
All eight education districts also took interns. The four rural districts were Cape Winelands (Psychology or Social Work, Public Administration, Office Management), Eden and Central Karoo (Finance, Public Management or Administration, Social Work, Human Resource Management), Overberg (Human Resource Management, Accounting) and West Coast (Public Administration or Management, Finance, Psychology or Social Work). In the metro, Metro East wanted Public Administration, Finance, Human Resource Management and Public Management; Metro North wanted Finance, Psychology or Social Work and Public Management or Administration; Metro South wanted Finance and Social Work; and Metro Central wanted Public Administration and Finance.
Qualifications the WCED accepted
Applicants needed a three-year diploma or degree at NQF level 6 or 7 in Financial Management Systems, Financial Management or Accounting; Human Resource Management or Development; Industrial Psychology; Public Management or Administration; Communication; Internal Audit; Taxation; Management; Data Science or Statistics; or Information Technology. Psychology and Social Work were the exception: for those, the WCED asked for a three- or four-year degree at NQF level 8. Some placements in the table, such as Law or Industrial Relations and Economics, do not appear in this qualification list, so graduates in those fields would need to check with the WCED before applying.
The advert also asked for computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the internet, and good written and spoken skills in two of the Western Cape’s official languages. Anyone who had already been through a WCED graduate internship was excluded.
The online form and the Z83
For the 2026 intake the WCED took applications only through a Google Form linked from the advert. That form now says it is no longer accepting responses. Applicants had to upload:
- a CV
- a completed Z83 form, the standard government job application form
- a certified copy of the qualification
- a certified copy of a South African bar-coded ID book or ID card
- academic results certified by the institution
- a certified copy of the Matric certificate
Certified copies older than six months and faxed documents were rejected. The WCED contacted only shortlisted candidates and told applicants who had heard nothing by 31 March 2026 to treat the application as unsuccessful. The 2026 advert named Ms B. Mpama (Buyiswa.Mpama@westerncape.gov.za, 021 467 2550) and Mr A. Mtamzeli (Asive.Mtamzeli@westerncape.gov.za, 021 829 0417) at head office for enquiries. New intakes are posted under “For Graduate Interns” on the WCED vacancies page.
While the WCED has no intake open, graduates can watch the national government internships circulars. Students still studying in the province can look at the Western Cape government bursaries, including the Western Cape Provincial Treasury bursary for finance students.
