What is Auditing?
Auditing is an on-site verification process that examines a quality system to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. It involves a systematic review of transactions to guarantee accurate financial record-keeping.
Types of Auditors
There are two types of auditors: internal and external. Internal auditors are appointed by the business owner to conduct audits, preventing financial flaws and ensuring company goals are met. External auditors, on the other hand, are third-party professionals (e.g., SARS, insurance companies) who examine financial records and operations.
Becoming an Auditor
To become an auditor, follow these steps:
- Obtain a relevant qualification from an IIA-endorsed institution which may offer internship programs.
- Gain practical experience through internships.
- Join a professional body like IIA SA to increase employability.
- Complete the IIA SA training program and write the CIA exam or speciality exam.
- Maintain professional designations by adhering to IIA SA requirements. External auditors who sign audit opinions first qualify as chartered accountants and then register with the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA).
