Barberton Mines works the Fairview, Sheba and New Consort gold mines in Mpumalanga, among the oldest gold workings anywhere in the world. Its bursary funds engineering and geology students in full, from fees and accommodation to electronic equipment and a stipend, and brings them underground for vacation work each year.
About the Barberton Mines Bursary
- Fields: electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mining engineering and geology.
- Covers registration and tuition fees, accommodation, prescribed textbooks, electronic equipment and a stipend.
- Includes vacation work at the mine during university breaks.
Barberton Mines Bursary eligibility requirements
- South African citizen.
- Studying, or accepted, in one of the four qualifying fields at an accredited tertiary institution.
- At least 60% in every subject in the previous year.
- Strong communication skills, leadership and management potential, and no criminal record.
How to apply for the Barberton Mines Bursary
- Open the bursary application on the Barberton Mines website when the round opens.
- Upload a certified ID, certified Matric certificate, complete academic records with your most recent results, proof of tertiary admission if you are entering first year, certified proof of residence no older than three months and a security clearance certificate.
- Submit before the closing date. Shortlisted applicants are interviewed at the mine.
Barberton Mines Bursary closing date
31 August 2026 for the 2027 academic year (closed). Expect the end of August 2027 for 2028.
