Fields of Study
In South Africa, careers in hygiene and public health usually start with a four-year Bachelor of Environmental Health, offered at universities of technology such as CPUT, TUT, DUT, CUT and at UJ, NMU and Walter Sisulu University.
Environmental health practitioners register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and complete community service, then work for municipalities, mines, food producers and health departments.
Occupational hygienists, who protect workers from dust, noise and chemicals, register with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene. A Master of Public Health suits those moving into epidemiology or health policy.
