The KwaZulu-Natal Film Commission (KZNFC) is the provincial agency that funds and promotes film and television production in the province. Its bursary programme trains the next generation of producers, editors and animators by funding KwaZulu-Natal students at the province’s public institutions.
About the KZN Film Commission Bursary
The bursary funds NQF level 6 and higher qualifications at public accredited institutions in KwaZulu-Natal in:
- Film and television production (undergraduate).
- Animation (undergraduate or postgraduate).
Acting and performance studies are not funded. The bursary covers full tuition, accommodation for students living more than 50 km from campus, and a monthly allowance.
KZN Film Commission Bursary eligibility requirements
- South African citizen living in KwaZulu-Natal.
- Completed Matric, or in the final year of the current qualification.
- Enrolled, or accepted, at a public accredited institution in KwaZulu-Natal for one of the qualifications above.
- Preference for students with disabilities and previously disadvantaged applicants.
How to apply for the KZN Film Commission Bursary
- Download the application form from the KZNFC funding portal at funding.kznfilm.co.za.
- Attach certified copies of: your ID; your Matric results or certificate; academic transcripts; proof of acceptance or registration; the institution’s fee schedule; proof of household income; proof of disability if applicable; and a motivation letter.
- Email the application to bursary@kznfilm.co.za with the subject line “KZN Film Bursary 2027” before 31 October 2026.

31 October each year. Expect 31 October 2026 for the 2027 academic year.
