The latest Metsimaholo database call (notice 16/2025/2026) closed on 25 March 2026 per metsimaholo.gov.za; no date is published for the next call.
Metsimaholo Local Municipality, based in Sasolburg in the Fezile Dabi district of the Free State, does not advertise its internships and learnerships one post at a time. Instead it calls for applications to a recruitment database that stays active for a year, and fills five kinds of fixed-term training contract from it as places come up. One application puts a resident in line for whichever programme matches their qualification, from a Grade 9 learnership to a two-year finance internship for graduates.
The most recent call, public notice 16/2025/2026, closed at 16:00 on 25 March 2026. The municipality has not announced when it will next open the database.
Five programmes and their stipends
The March 2026 notice lists these programmes. Stipends are the municipality’s approximate monthly figures; for the three SETA-funded learning programmes they depend on the funding agreement with the LGSETA or another funder.
| Programme | Entry requirement | Contract length | Stipend a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| LGSETA internship | Relevant degree or National Diploma | 12 months | about R3,500 |
| LGSETA workplace-integrated learning (WIL) | Relevant N6 certificate | 18 to 24 months | about R2,500 |
| LGSETA learnership | Grade 9 to Grade 12 | 12 months | about R1,500 |
| National Treasury Financial Management Internship | Degree or National Diploma majoring in Economics, Accounting, Finance, Internal Audit or Risk Management | 24 months | about R4,333 in year 1; R8,333 in year 2 |
| LGSETA apprenticeship | Grade 10 to 12 with Maths, or N2 Maths and Science | 24 to 36 months | about R1,500 |
Graduate interns are placed in a department that matches their field and do the work assigned there. WIL learners rotate through the tasks their college logbook requires, so the N6 route suits students who still need practical time to receive their National Diploma. Learners and apprentices work towards the duties set by their qualification.
The two-year finance internship and the MFMP certificate
The finance internship is the best paid and the most structured of the five. Interns are appointed under the Municipal Finance Management Act’s Financial Management Grant and rotate through the finance departments and the departments in the Office of the Municipal Manager. In the first year the municipality sponsors the Municipal Finance Management Programme (MFMP) certificate. The year-two increase, to R100,000 a year, depends on the intern’s statement of results showing “competent” for that certificate.
The notice is not consistent on the first-year amount: the table gives about R4,333 a month, which is R52,000 a year, while the text beside it says R58,000 a year. The August 2025 notice gave R52,000 for year one. Ask the municipality which figure applies before you sign.
Paper applications only, and a ward councillor’s letter
Each application needs three things:
- a detailed CV;
- a certified copy of your ID and your qualifications;
- proof of residence from your ward councillor.
The municipality does not accept emailed applications. Post them to Metsimaholo Local Municipality, PO Box 60, Sasolburg 1947, or hand them in at the main municipal office on the ground floor in Fichardt Street, Sasolburg. Applicants go through background screening, including verification of qualifications, a criminal record check and security vetting. Because it expects a large number of applications, the municipality does not acknowledge receipt.
Enquiries go to Ms Minah Sediane on 016 973 8445 or Ms Kedibone Phomodi on 016 973 8402. The notices are published on the municipal notice boards, the Learnerships page of metsimaholo.gov.za and the municipality’s Facebook page.
When Metsimaholo opens the database
The calls do not follow a fixed month. The notices kept on the municipal website show calls closing on 29 May 2023 (after an extension), 27 June 2024, 26 August 2025 and 25 March 2026. Since each database is valid for a year, the list compiled in March 2026 is the one the municipality is drawing on now. Residents who missed it can only keep checking the Learnerships page and the municipal notice boards for the next call.
Related funding in the Free State and local government
The LGSETA funds most of these contracts; its own study funding is described in the LGSETA provider profile. Free State residents who are still studying can also look at Free State government bursaries, and finance students at the site’s accounting bursaries.
