Barloworld is an industrial group best known for distributing Caterpillar earthmoving equipment in Southern Africa. Barloworld’s history page records a major change: a standby offer for the group became wholly unconditional on 1 October 2025, and Barloworld then delisted from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and A2X Markets.

A group that has reshaped itself
Barloworld’s recent milestones show a company restructuring and focusing its portfolio. On 13 December 2022 Barloworld unbundled its car rental and leasing business, which listed separately. In 2020 Barloworld completed the sale of its equipment business in Mongolia and the acquisition of Tongaat Hulett Starch, which now trades as Ingrain. Dr Lulu Gwagwa joined as chairman of the board on 1 October 2021.
Barloworld has also won recognition for social and sustainability work. Barloworld Mbewu won the CSI Legacy Best Corporate Award in 2024, Barloworld launched Africa’s first gender bond in August 2022, and Barloworld won the Gender Mainstreaming Champions award in 2020.
The Barloworld Education Trust bursary
The Barloworld Education Trust funds students in fields linked to the group’s businesses. The trust has used a 31 July closing date, and the last window closed on 31 July 2026. After the delisting and ownership change, students should confirm the next dates directly with Barloworld rather than assume the trust will follow the same calendar.
How to research Barloworld now
Because Barloworld’s ownership changed in 2025, check whether the new owners continue the Education Trust, which fields it will fund and whether bursars must work in a Barloworld business after graduating. Barloworld’s careers page invites people to search and apply for positions, and that page is the best place to watch for a trust announcement.
Learn about Barloworld Equipment’s Caterpillar business before applying. Heavy equipment sales and service need mechanical and electrical engineers, diesel technicians and commercial staff, so applicants in those fields can explain a clear connection to Barloworld’s work.
Ask as well about Barloworld Mbewu, the group’s socio-economic development programme, which may run separate community education initiatives.
Ingrain, the starch and glucose business Barloworld acquired, adds another set of skills to the group, including chemical engineering and food processing, so students in those fields can ask whether the trust supports them too.
Engineering and commerce students can compare Barloworld with other funders on our Engineering Bursaries page.
