Bergrivier Municipality

Bergrivier Municipality governs an area on the West Coast of the Western Cape that includes Piketberg, Porterville, Velddrif, Aurora, Eendekuil and Redelinghuys. The municipality takes its name from the Berg River, which flows through the area to the sea at Velddrif.

A municipality that asks residents for input

Bergrivier Municipality’s website shows the everyday work of a small municipality. For the 2026/27 financial year, Bergrivier invited electricity consumers to comment on its Electricity Cost of Supply Study and proposed tariff structures before the Municipal Council approved the study on 31 March 2026 for submission to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

Bergrivier explained that court rulings obtained by AfriForum in December 2025 and February 2026 required municipalities to submit their 2026/27 electricity tariff applications to NERSA by 31 March 2026, and that NERSA would hold its own public participation in April 2026. Notices like these show the technical and financial skills a municipality needs, from electrical engineering to municipal finance.

The external study bursary

Bergrivier Municipality funds residents through an external study bursary. The bursary for 2027 closed on 4 September 2026 at 15:00, so students who missed it should watch the municipality’s website from mid-2027 for the next round.

How Bergrivier residents can prepare

Municipal bursaries usually require proof that the applicant lives in the municipal area, so keep a municipal account, lease or letter confirming your address in one of Bergrivier’s towns. Ask the municipality’s offices in Piketberg which fields the bursary prioritises, whether it covers TVET college study as well as university, and whether bursars must work for the municipality after qualifying.

Read the municipality’s integrated development plan, which Bergrivier publishes for public comment. The plan shows which projects and services the municipality is prioritising, and a bursary applicant who links their studies to those priorities, such as water, electricity or local economic development, gives a strong reason for funding.

West Coast students can also look at other local funders, including the community bursary run by the phosphate mine at Elandsfontein for the neighbouring Saldanha Bay area.

Bergrivier’s towns depend on farming, fishing and tourism, from the wheat fields around Piketberg to the salt pans and fishing harbour at Velddrif, so fields such as agriculture, tourism and environmental management may matter to the municipality as much as engineering.
