What happened to BHP in South Africa

In 2015 BHP separated a group of assets, including South African coal, aluminium and manganese operations, into a new company called South32. As a result, many operations that South African students associate with BHP Billiton now sit under South32 or other owners rather than under BHP.

Then look at South32’s website and careers pages, because South32 operates assets that used to belong to BHP in Southern Africa and may run its own bursaries or graduate programmes.

Mining students should also check whether the mine near their community has changed hands in the past decade. A quick search of the mine’s name and its current owner prevents wasted applications to companies that no longer operate there.

Because the BHP scheme has no current intake, apply to active mining bursaries now. Several mining houses listed on BursariesAfrica publish bursary dates each year, and those programmes give students a realistic chance of funding for 2027.

Students who find an old BHP Billiton advert online should check its date. Many copies of past adverts circulate on third-party sites years after the round closed.
