BHP, formerly BHP Billiton, is one of the world’s largest mining companies, and its South African bursary funded the mining, metallurgy and geology students the industry needs. Since the group spun off its South African assets into South32 in 2015 its local footprint has shrunk, and the bursary has not been advertised widely in recent years.

About the BHP Bursary

  • Fields: mining engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering (light and heavy current), extractive metallurgy, chemical engineering with a mineral processing focus, mine surveying and geology.
  • Covered tuition, registration and examination fees, prescribed textbooks, accommodation, meals and pocket money.
  • Included a computer allowance in second year and vacation work or integrated workplace learning.

BHP Bursary eligibility requirements

  • South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • In Grade 12, or already studying at university.
  • At least Level 6 (about a C symbol) in Mathematics and Physical Science for the engineering, science and geology fields.
  • Accepted, or enrolled, at a recognised South African tertiary institution, with financial need.

How the BHP Bursary was applied for

  1. Applicants downloaded the bursary application form from the BHP or Career Wise website.
  2. They attached certified copies of their ID, Matric results or certificate, academic record and proof of acceptance or registration, plus proof of household income.
  3. The application was posted to Career Wise (Pty) Ltd, PO Box 30632, Braamfontein 2017, before the closing date.

Closing date

No 2027 date has been announced. Confirm the scheme’s status with Career Wise before applying.
