H&I Construction promotes an employee ownership business model, which H&I says breeds rationality, passion and innovation. H&I also says it invests in people who engineer quality, cost-effective, innovative and safety-first solutions that create social, economic and environmental value for stakeholders.

The company has built up vertically integrated operations, including its own crushing and concrete production, to support its roadworks, according to a provider record checked in August 2026. Controlling materials as well as construction gives H&I more control over quality and cost on road projects.

A bursary with a gap year

The Haw & Inglis bursary is designed to develop future leaders in construction by combining financial support with compulsory, structured work experience, according to BursariesAfrica’s earlier guide. The programme includes a gap year of practical work, which introduces students to real construction sites before or during their studies.

A gap year in road construction teaches lessons classrooms cannot: how site teams work, how earthworks and asphalt layers go down, and how safety is managed on a live road. Students who complete it arrive at university with a clear picture of civil engineering in practice.
