A group that has changed shape

Murray & Roberts was once best known as one of South Africa’s largest building and civil engineering contractors. Over the past two decades the group has sold or closed many of its construction businesses and focused increasingly on specialist mining contracting, through businesses such as Murray & Roberts Cementation, which sinks shafts and develops underground mines. The group’s Australian subsidiary Clough entered voluntary administration in December 2022, a major setback that led to further restructuring.

Because the group has changed so much, older information about Murray & Roberts bursaries may describe businesses that no longer exist in the same form.

Safety and a tragic accident

The Murray & Roberts website still carries a notice about a tragic road accident on 17 September 2023 that killed and injured people connected to Murray & Roberts Cementation. The notice directs families and friends to the Cementation switchboard for queries, a reminder of how seriously mining contractors must treat the safety of workers travelling to and from sites.
