Banking products students may know
Nedbank’s personal banking includes the Money app, Greenbacks rewards for everyday transactions, and even a mobile network, Nedbank Connect, offering data and voice bundles. Nedbank also runs an ethics tip-off line for reporting corruption and human rights complaints.
For students who do not win a bursary, Nedbank offers student loans that cover fees, books and accommodation. Full-time students’ guarantors pay only the monthly interest while the student studies, and Nedbank links preferential interest rates to academic performance. A loan must be repaid, however, so students should treat it as a last resort after bursaries and NSFAS.
Why Nedbank funds STEM and green skills
Nedbank funds bursaries partly because South Africa faces a genuine shortage of graduates in engineering, data science and renewable energy, and partly to build its own talent pipeline, according to a provider record checked in August 2026. Nedbank frames the programme as an investment in the country’s skills base as well as a recruitment tool, and the provider record says bursars are generally expected to work for Nedbank for a period matched to their funding.
The External Bursary Programme
Nedbank’s External Bursary Programme targets academically strong students from financially disadvantaged homes. The 2027 call covered sciences such as physics, chemistry and environmental science; technology fields including computer science, data science, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence; civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, industrial and mechatronics engineering; actuarial science and statistics; and green economy fields such as renewable energy, climate science, water resources and sustainable agriculture.
The bursary covers tuition, accommodation and study expenses for undergraduate and honours study at public universities and universities of technology. Applicants need at least a 65% average and Mathematics, not Mathematical Literacy. The 2027 round closed on 31 August 2026, and Nedbank opens the programme around June each year.
