Schauenburg Education Trust

The Schauenburg Education Trust is the education arm of the Schauenburg group in South Africa. Schauenburg Systems designs, manufactures and implements safety, monitoring and communication technology for the mining industry, including tracking, fire detection and proximity systems for underground and surface mines, and is based in Kempton Park, according to a provider record checked in August 2026.

Technology that keeps miners safe

Schauenburg describes itself as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for mine safety, designing digital technologies and turnkey solutions. Regulations drive much of that work: from 28 March 2025, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy’s updated Mine Health and Safety Act regulation 16.7 made a missing person locator system mandatory. Schauenburg also argues that South African mining’s growing complexity requires specialised skills, and that a workforce trained with OEM expertise reduces operational safety risks.

A trust founded to open doors

Florian Schauenburg, CEO of the Schauenburg International Group, founded the Schauenburg Education Trust to empower disadvantaged individuals and communities through educational opportunities. Lewis Mathieson, managing director of Schauenburg Systems, serves as a trustee.

The trust contributed R3.3 million towards a STEM education centre at Afrika Tikkun’s Wings of Life Centre in Diepsloot, with two classrooms, offices, a kitchen and ablution facilities. Wings of Life opened in 2008, is Afrika Tikkun’s largest centre with a team of 82 people, and follows a “cradle to career” model supporting young people’s health, education and future work.

The bursary

The trust’s bursary funds BSc and BEng degrees in electrical and electronic engineering, and BCom degrees in business administration and business management, at the University of Pretoria, the University of Johannesburg, North-West University’s Vanderbijlpark campus and the University of the Witwatersrand. The bursary starts from second year and pays tuition, registration and examination fees directly to the university, plus accommodation, textbook and living allowances.

Applicants must be black South African citizens as defined in B-BBEE legislation, entering second, third or fourth year, with all courses passed and no other bursary. Preference goes to women, applicants under 35 and students with disabilities. The 2027 round ran from 1 June to 31 July 2026.
