Two Rivers Platinum (Pty) Ltd

Two Rivers Platinum (TRP) operates a platinum group metals mine on the farm Dwarsrivier, about 35 kilometres south-west of Burgersfort in Limpopo, on the southern part of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. TRP is a joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), which owns 54% and manages the mine, and Impala Platinum, which owns 46%.

From Merensky’s discovery to a mine

Hans Merensky first discovered platinum in the area on the nearby farm Maandagshoek, now Modikwa Platinum, in the 1920s; in 1924 he established that the Bushveld Complex holds about 90% of the world’s known platinum reserves. Rivers Platinum, a joint venture between Avmin and Implats, secured the platinum rights at Two Rivers in December 2001, and Avmin’s share later moved to ARM Platinum. TRP’s concentrator was commissioned early in the 2007 financial year, and the mine became an operation in 2008.

Two reefs and a mountain

Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs occur at Two Rivers. The UG2 reef outcrops in the Klein Dwarsrivier valley over 7.5 kilometres, and the Merensky reef lies 140 to 160 metres above it, outcropping further up the steep mountain slope. TRP mines the UG2 through three on-reef decline shafts feeding a UG2 concentrator.

The Merensky Project

TRP’s Merensky Project, under way since February 2021, develops the Merensky reef and builds a new concentrator plant, extending the mine’s life by 20 years and creating work for local communities. The project included a completed Eskom power connection and extra water from the Lebalelo scheme. TRP says it values relationships with local government and traditional leaders, or magoshi.

Training and bursaries

TRP runs an MQA-accredited training centre that uses simulators and virtual reality for trackless mobile machinery training. TRP’s Study Assistance Programme offers bursaries to employees and to children from local communities who meet its criteria, and TRP aims for a workforce reflecting South Africa’s demographics. The 2026 round funded registered students in engineering, nursing, science, agriculture, municipal engineering and postgraduate medical research, and closed on 28 February 2026. TRP does not publish detailed work-back terms.
